As you can see, Search Engine Killer is highly configurable
with many different options. Here are some thumbnail examples of
what SEK2 produces with links to larger versions and comments. Click
on the thumbnail to see the larger picture. Click anywhere on the
larger picture to close it. *Please note that we are official
partners and consultants to SEK2 and have already advised the developer
of this great module regarding our concerns and possible improvements.
We understand and so should you that some requests and suggestions will
not be feasible for a one-size-fits-all module and must remain the realm
of custom development.
STATIC INDEX PAGE
You will notice that all the images pulled from the Merchant
welcome message field are not broken. This was made possible with
the tips discussed in Part
1 of this review. Check out the title on the top of Internet
Explorer on the larger version. The title is in all lowercase and
is not even close to a descriptive sentence or statement. See our
tips on
how to make it better. You will also notice that the category tree is
not wide enough to accommodate the full length of the category names.
We believe that the category tree should be configurable as well, so that
it will be more visually appealing. This client does not even use
the category tree, so we customized SEK2 to not use it. [See
Example] For clients who do use the category tree, we can customize
it any way they want.
STATIC CATEGORY PAGE
Notice that the store description is on this page as well.
This is not very targeted. If you have a category header, SEK2 will
use that which is good. [See
Example] But we would prefer that the store description stay
on the index page and not be added anywhere else. We also do not like
the text links at the top. It would be optimal to have the category
header as the first text on the page. See the previous example.
You will also notice that there is no price included. While some
may not want the price included, most of our clients see no reason why
it should not be listed. Updating the static mirror to include changed
prices is simple and easy even for novices. Having the price listed
as an option would be optimal. This client uses short descriptions,
so they felt there was no reason for a shopper to click to either the
static or Merchant product page if they were ready to order. We
customized the category page to show the price and even allow the shopper
to start ordering. [See
Example] SEK2 has special code that shortens the product description
on the category pages, but we have found that it is buggy in cases where
you have html in your product description, especially if the html is toward
the end of the description. One client had quite a few products
that ended with <b>Technical Material</b> and that was all
that was being displayed! In this case, the code simply had to be
customized to fix the problem. Just be aware of this potential complication.
You will also notice in this example that the static category page name
is the actual category name and not the category code that SEK2 would
normally create. Having Mediums_26_Varnishes.html rather than 2.html
is much better in our opinion. We just started this campaign, and
their static directory has not appeared in Google yet, but our other clients
have had no problem with symbols, underscores, or numbers in page names.
The important thing is having the words Mediums and Varnishes in the page
name.
STATIC PRODUCT PAGE
Our comments on the product page that is produced by SEK2
are basically the same as the category pages. We would prefer the
product name, image, and description appear before the navigational text
links, if at all. We customized this client's static product pages
like the category pages. [See
Example] You will see that we include navigational links at the bottom
rather than the top.
WHAT KIND OF RESULTS CAN YOU SEE?
Here are some examples of clients who have "killed"
Google in particular and the directories that use its database with a
static mirror created by Search Engine Killer. Some of these are
customized a little while some are heavily customized. You can definitely
kill Google without customization, but the results may not be as effective.
Has had over 800
static pages from SEK2 listed in Google at one time.
SEK2 page received the number one ranking and sometimes number
two as well for the keyphrase, teens halloween costumes, in Google,
Yahoo,
IWon,
and AOL.
Received 292,518 visits in October.
117,914 of those visits came via their static mirror.
Sales have tripled.
Had to shutdown online store early until after Halloween due to incredible
volume of orders.
This is an uncustomized example of an SEK2 directory.
An excellent example of what you can do with the existing configuration
options of SEK2.
No static pages appear in Google, but this is not the fault of SEK2.
This site is not properly optimized for search engines to find the SEK2
pages from what we can tell at a glance.
This site is using an older version of SEK2 and a good example of
what not to do. Having tiny and hard-to-read text is a huge mistake.
Has ZERO static pages from SEK2 listed in Google currently. (Could
be for other reasons, but we would first consider the spamming technique
of tiny and hard-to-read text)
THINGS WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE CHANGED OR ADDED
An input field to add things in-between the head tags would be great.
(i.e. <head><link rel="stylesheet" href="../../cssjs/searchmain.css"
type="text/css" /></head> *You can
currently add this via the Top HTML field, but we would prefer to do
it between the head tags.
Ability to have category and product file names use their actual name
instead of code.
Have header image centered. *Although we don't recommend using it
anyway. :)
Make the copyright field a global footer field and code it to accept
html without being on one line.
Ability to configure the category tree. (i.e. width and color)
Ability to add category tree to category and/or product pages if so
desired.
HTML fixes. (numerous missing </tr> tags, etc.)
Option to not include &Store_Code=storecode in direct category
and product links. (Customers with search engine maintenance contracts
have already had their SEK2 customized for this.)
Even with the many things we would like to see changed or added, we highly
recommend SEK and give it a rating of 4 out of 5 bananas.
As you can see, Search Engine Killer is a bargain at 59.97 PURCHASE
NOW! We provide customizations of SEK2 using the latest
techniques for proper search engine optimization for Miva Merchant.
