IMPORTANT SEARCH ENGINES FOR MIVA MERCHANT STORE OWNERS

Realizing what are the most important search engines can save you a lot of time and energy.  Many people waste money on having their site and store submitted to hundreds and even thousands of search engines.  This is not only a waste of time and money, but it may hurt you as well, because of poor-quality links pointing to your site, etc.  You should focus your time and resources on the top search engines, possibly a few specialty search engines related to your products, and other quality sites that are complimentary to yours.  Think quality and not quantity.

We are now going to review the major search engines and how they handle Miva Merchant pages.

GOOGLE

Google is considered the heavy-weight champion of the world when it comes to search engines.  It is the search engine most people use and is considered by most to contain the best results for consumers.  Google should definitely be the number-one priority of Miva Merchant store owners. Google provides the main listings for AOL, Netscape, Yahoo, and Hotbot. Google Adwords provides the paid listings for AOL, Ask Jeeves, Netscape, and Teoma.

Google used to indexe Miva Merchant pages out-of-the-box only if they contained one ampersand (&) symbol.  They now index urls with more than one. However, category paging links (i.e. 1 2 3 4) are extremely long and are currently not indexed. Fortunately, Viking coders released an update to their Category Page Templates module that makes their category paging links compatible with the Search Friendly Links module by Copernicus. Your category paging links can now be indexed by Google!

#2 INKTOMI

Inktomi is our number two pick, even though you can't even search the web from its website.  It provides backup search results for MSN, Overture, About.com, and Looksmart.  It is also one of the four major providers of main listings for Hotbot.  Yahoo recently purchased Intomi which could be significant down the road if they become the primary source for main search listings in Yahoo.  From what we can tell, Inktomi does not particularly like Miva Merchant pages.  It does, however, love Search Engine Killer pages and search friendly links.

#3 FAST/ALL THE WEB

FAST is considered number three behind Google (which isn't bad).  FAST provides the main search results for Lycos, Hotbot, and itself.  Miva Merchant screens do quite well with one or more ampersand symbols in the url.  Currently, there are over 330,000 Miva Merchant category pages and over 64,000 product pages listed in the FAST search engine.  If you search with different combinations in their advanced search, there are even more than these numbers.  FAST loves Search Engine Killer pages as well.
