» Custom Fatal Error Message Tutorial - JMH Web Services
Don't you hate those customer-unfriendly error messages that Miva Merchant generates?

It doesn't feel good knowing that if you ever change a product or category code, your customers will get a Fatal Error message when they access a product or category in your store that they have bookmarked or for other reasons that would generate an error.

This is a tutorial on how to manually change the screen that Miva Merchant generates for errors. It will work whether you are using the MMUI or OpenUI look and feel. You will need to download util.mv from the following directory:

www.yourdomain.com/Merchant2/4.13/lib/util.mv
Depending on what version of Miva Merchant you are using, you may have to adjust the location. (i.e. /4.13/ to /4.12/, etc.) You should now save a copy of util.mv in a backup directory.

Now follow these steps:

  1. Open util.mv in your favorite text editor.
  2. Go to line 420 and change the error page title from Miva Merchant: Fatal Error to something nicer like There was A Problem or whatever you want.  This is the text that will be displayed in the browser's title at the top. The surrounding code will look like this. If you don't have line numbers available in your text editor, this will help you search for this part of the code:

  3. Go to line 433 and change the text from Fatal Error to something nicer like Ooops!  There was a problem or whatever you want.  This is the text that will be displayed in the body of the error page. The surrounding code will look like this.

  4. Go to line 449 and change the text from Miva Merchant has encountered a fatal error, blah, blah, blah to something nicer like There was an error or that page doesn't exist anymore. Please contact us and let us know what you were trying to do or access.  You may continue shopping. or whatever you want.  This text is also displayed in the body of the error page. The surrounding code will look like this.

  5. Below the above, you will see code to display the error code and the description of the error (i.e. Error Code: Description, etc.)  You can choose to delete this information or request that your shopper include it in their email.
  6. In case you didn't notice on line 425, Miva forgot to include a BODY tag!!!!!! Feel free to add your own. Here is what the surrounding code looks like in case you need to search for it.

  7. You can now save and upload util.mv.
  8. You need to test it now and have the backup ready to upload in case there is a problem. Just browse to a category in your store and replace the category code with something like ERROR to force an error message. After you see the error message, you can edit util.mv again to adjust the look. If it makes you feel better, browse your store a little bit after this and see that your store is working fine.

As you edit the code, you will see various pieces of html for font formatting, table layout, etc.  You can change all these to make your error page either simple or complex.

Here are some examples of custom error messages:
