1 Search Engine Killer Wump Services / Miva Central

Have you ever wondered why you're not getting massive hits on your Miva Merchant Store when you have the best prices on the Internet? Ever searched the internet through a search engine only to find that some ancient, inefficient and cumbersome old site is getting all the hits that you deserve?

Well now its time to get serious, its time to get even... its time to bring in the Search Engine KILLER.

THE PROBLEM
merchant.mv?thisandthat

The problem with Miva Merchant and other database driven stores is that the technology used to access and display the product information is NOT search engine friendly.. In fact, most search engines will ignore EVERY PAGE of your eStore!

Someone somewhere made the decision that URLs with arguments, information passed long with the URL eg. file.mv?argument1&argument2 etc, indicates that the page isn't worth indexing, but these arguments are essential to any database driven store. Some search engines even refuse to index pages that are .mv! (Northern Light for one).

As a result, your state of the art Miva Merchant Store is missing out on major search engine exposure, and your competitors lousy mall which they hand create using FrontPage97 is getting all the hits.. JUST BECAUSE EVERY PAGE IS A STATIC HTML PAGE.

In an ideal world, what you need is the sophistication of your Miva Merchant Mall and the search engine pulling power of a good old HTML site too.

THE SOLUTION
Now YOU can live in that ideal world!

Search Engine Killer (or SEK for short) is perhaps the most significant software release for Merchant stores EVER!

While it adds NOTHING to the functionality of Merchant, it wages war on search engines - those sites who may well decide how much money you make next month.

It is a sophisticated complementary product which runs seperately from Merchant, but knows everything about your store!

The mirror site is:
  • 100% HTML
  • Designed with the Search Engine in mind using the Title tag, Meta Tags, text placement, IMG ALT attributes and more to get you the best possible search engine ranking.
  • automatically generates HTML pages from the information stored within Merchant:
- an index.html page for submition to search engines with a link to every other generated page
- an html page for each category and subcategory, eg. your_category_code.html which lists every product and links to..
- an html page for each product
  • product pictures througout! The SEK Mirror references the URL of the product images already online in your real merchant store!
  • multiple links on every html page to both the SEK Mirror pages (so that the search engines find and index every single page) and directly to your Merchant Mall..
  • dynamic referencing technology is used so that the links back to your Miva Merchant Mall are context sensitive. eg. SEK Mirror product pages click straight through to the appropriate BUY ONE page in your real Merchant Store!
  • remembers your previous preferences to allow ultra-fast regeneration after significant changes to your mall
  • SAME NAMING CONVENTIONS AS SEK1
  • the html files generated are named using the Merchant Category and Product codes you have specified in Merchnat so that even after a new mirror is generated the Search Engines find previously indexed files.
  • Even if search engines DID spider every page of your Merchant Store, there is NO WAY that it would get the same high rankings. Your SEK Mirrors site is built from the ground up with search engines in mind by a developer with many years of experience in site promotion.
and here is the trick..

EVERY PAGE IS DESIGNED TO GIVE THE IMPRESSION THAT IT IS YOUR STORE WHEN IT IS REALLY JUST A TEASER PAGE

What will it mean to your business to be able to submit a single html page to search engines and have their spider catalog every category and product you have?

How would you like to be able to strengthen your position by submitting an html page for each category that can also be submitted seperately?

2 Power Search v5 Emporium Plus / Miva Central

The purpose of Power Search is to allow a customer to search one or more fields which are allowed by the store owner. The store owner can choose any fields within the products database and/or the custom product fields (Miva Corp built-in utility module) database to be searchable. This module is for MIVA Merchant 5.x. We also have the corresponding module for an older version of Merchant.

Features:
- Implements field specific, keyword searching
- Uses store morph technology to build templates with version history
- Customer selects the fields to search and the sort order they want the results displayed
- Search the whole store or limit to one category
- Search by all (AND), any (OR), exact phrase, or begins with
- Display total found, number of pages, and links to each page when the results exceed one page
- Use the same product list layout as original search or alter for your needs
- Can limit search to a specific price range
- Use in conjunction with the Emporium Plus Tell A Friend module to send searches to a friend
- Product page "return to search" link takes customers back to the same search page
- View admin log of searched words/phrases for marketing and keyword identification
- Maintain compatibility with 3rd party modules which use the MIVA Corp custom product fields
- Create pre-defined select list searches on a single field
- License per domain/mall

Feature Details.
Easily editable templates. The module has five templates which can be used for each section of the search page. The templates have full versionhistory and use standard Merchant 5 template coding for easy update and rollback of changes. Each template is pulled into the location you want it on the search page using a render token. The templates are field selection, category selection, search scope/type, page counter and links, and product list layout.

Search specific fields and sort results. Allow a customer to search one or more fields which are made selectable by the store owner. The store owner can choose, in the admin screen, any fields within the products database or the MIVA Merchant built in custom product fields database to be available. The Power Search module uses a mirror database of your products, custom fields and categories; much like the big search engines use. By creating a mirror before the search is made, many operations to join multiple databases togethercan be avoided, so the customer gets a much faster search. Customers can also sort the results on fields like name, code, price, cost, when they were added to the store, or the default display order the store owner established for productlists. The build of the mirror database goes quite quickly and is a maintenance procedure you will do periodically. The small amount of time you take to build the mirror will save your customers significant amounts of time in their searches vs searches which don't use an optimized mirror database. Buildingthe mirror is not required just because products are added, deleted, or edited; as those processes update the mirror automatically without needing a rebuild. See the install doc for details.

Category selectable. Customers can use the category selector to select just one category to search. The default is to search the whole store. You can use the built in token which lists all categories with one or more products in them oryou can build your own select list of only certain categories.

Multiple search types. The customer can select how they want to search the database. The default is to search for products where all (boolean AND) of the keywords entered are found in the record. The customer can broaden that search so that any (boolean OR) of the words are found in the record. They can search by exact phrase so that the words must appear in thesame order in the record as was entered in the search input. They can also search the fields where the data in the field begins with the search string. This is useful for things like finding all of the products whose NAME begins with a specific letter and allows you to have a list of A-Z links that implement that specific search.

Advanced pagination. The module can display the total number of products found which match the search condition. Additionally, the pagesare numbered, e.g. Page 3 of 20, when results exceed the configurable number of products per page. You can also display alist of page numbers and links to those pages so the customer can jump to the page they want to look at. This pagination is similar to that used in the Emporium Plus Category Manager module.

Product layout template can be customized. In the 'srch' page template, there is a "search results layout". If you are happy with that layout, you can copy and paste the contents of that template into the Power Search module's product layout template. You can then modify the layout in the Power Search admin screen.

Price range searching. While searching the price field might be useful in some cases, a more popular search is price range. Within the searchable fields section, the customer has the option of entering a low and high price to create a range. If left blank, the search will not be filtered by price range.

Tell a friend module interface. If the store is using the Emporium Plus Tell A Friend module, customers can send the search string from Power Search to friends. The link in the email will go to the same page of products that the customer was on when they clicked the Tell A Friend button.

Return to search page link. After going to the product page from a Power Search rendered search, a convenient "return to search" link on the product page can bring the customer back to the original search page.

Search log with admin report. In admin, you can view the log of search words/phrases which your customers have used. This helps you from a marketing standpoint to determine the most sought after products and possibly the need to carry a new product. Additionally, it helps you identify keywords which might be useful to include in the narrative descriptions or the meta tags for search engine submissions and even local searches in your store. As example, while you might have a product called flip flops, customers might be searching for thong sandals (which is the same thing). But if you had not used those words in your description, you may have lost the sale. The log can be purged in the admin screen to reduce its size as desired.

Optimized search of built-in custom product fields. This module does not require that you use a proprietary 3rd party module for the custom product fields. It uses the built-in custom product fields module from MIVA Corp, thereby ensuring compatibility with other 3rd party modules which use those same custom product fields. No need to go down that proprietary datafield path of no return. As example, the Emporium Plus Template Data Feed module can use the built-in custom product fields to populate feeds to just about any search engine and shopping index with those "special" fields those indexes require.

Live examples. We cannot link to our demo Merchant 5 store from MivaCentral so if you'd like to see a couple of the live pages demonstrating searches, please contact us for the link. You can check out the selected field search in our test store which has about 600 products with multiple custom product fields. Try some searches so you can get an idea of search speed.

Pre-defined selectors. The Power Search function can also be used for pre-defined select pulldowns in your store. An example of genre and decade searches are in the lower left column of our test store's storefront screen. It will search a specific field, with store owner pre-defined selections. This same technique can be used for things like manufacturer searches if you have a manufacturer field in your custom product fields.

Liberal licensing. License is for ONE domain/mall. Within that single mall, it can be used in multiple stores without additional licenses.

This module requires that you are using MIVA Engine v5.03 or newer. When you log into admin, you can see which version of the engine is in use in your store.

3 Power Search Weiland / Miva Central

The Power Search module is a plugin module which implements field specific, keyword searching within a Miva Merchant 2.x storefront. License is for ONE mall. Within that single mall, it can be used in multiple stores without additional license.

The purpose of powrsrch.mv is to allow a customer to search one or more fields which are made selectable by the store owner. The store owner can choose any fields within the products.dbf structure to be available. If you have an altered products.dbf structure, it will even allow selection of those additional fields (see screen shot below).

You can also exclude a word or phrase. An example of an exclude word usage might be: You sell health food but want the ability for customers to NOT list ingredients they are allergic to. So in the product name field you might have Soup. Then if you have a field in your database called Ingredient the customer could check the name and ingredient fields for searching. In the keyword input they would put soup. In the exclude input they could put MSG. It would search both fields. If it found soup in either it would compile those products to the list. But if the word MSG appeared in either field, it would remove it from the list.

Specific category, if selected, allows one category only searches. This feature may be too intimidating if you have hundreds of categories as the pull down select would be quite long.

New for the compiled version is the ability to specify a price range for the search. Also, in the compiled version we added the ability to display links to numbered pages when the search results exceed the number of matches displayed on a single page. You can use OpenUI Tokens to place the search form in several locations in your store. You also have the ability to replace the default form with one which you design with your own html (for those who know how to write html forms). The alternate html form can also be placed at one of seven different locations on the storefront screen. You'll use the default form as a template and can then add your own layout to improve the look and feel. Also if you are using the compiled Power Search AND the compiled Tell A Friend module, customers can send the search string from Power Search to friends. The store owner also has the ability to allow customers to search the category headers and footers for the search word. Because this may slow the search, you should only use it if your store has a moderate number of categories, e.g. 100 or less. Faster servers may get decent search times with many more than that though. Added new search algorythms "Any of these", Exact phrase", and "Start at beginning". Store owners can create a list of words which will not be searched in the "All of these" or "Any of these" searches. These are words like a, an, the, and, or. It will not exclude those words in the "Start at the beginning" or "Exact phrase" searches. If you choose to use the "search single category" listing, you can modify that from the admin control panel and only list certain categories in the select list, but provide searches of all of their sub-categories. This top down search adds greater flexibility over how broad you will allow your customers to filter the categories. After going to the product page from a Power Search rendered search, a convenient "return to search" link on the product page will bring the customer back to the original search page if using OpenUI.

Power Search (version 4.63) has been tested with OpenDB (version 2.2) and is compatible. In tests by James at Copernicus, the Power Search improved the performance of the already, very fast, SQL searches.
118k products in the database, 2456 categories, two search terms "PC133 RAM"
- Normal Miva Merchant Search: ~60 seconds
- OpenDBv2 Standard Search: TT time=07s0620u
- OpenDBv2 Power Search (limit to code, name & desc fields and no category specific search): TT time=05s0259u

For store owners who have found their searches take too long, you can reduce the search time by only searching one or two fields. The Merchant default is eight fields, including fields such as weight. Now, how useful is that? Finally.... the store owner has control without editing the db.mv code library.

The total number of products found is displayed along with the list of products matching the search criteria.

In admin, you can view the log of search words/phrases which your customers have used. This helps you from a marketing standpoint to determine the most sought after products. Additionally, it helps you identify keywords which might be useful to include in the narrative descriptions or the meta tag for search engine submissions.

This module works with both the MMUI and OpenUI User Interfaces (versions 2.22-4.x). If using the MMUI, six edits in the mmui.mv file are required, and one optional edit if you want to remove the archaic standard Merchant, keyword search. If you have compiled Merchant (4.14 or newer) that requires editing and re-compiling, so for compiled Merchant, OpenUI is required unless you have the compiler license. If you are using the OpenUI, Power Search plugs into the OpenUI without editing OpenUI modules and there is no need for compiling in Merchant 4.14 and newer.

See the screen shot below, then check out the selected field search in our store. We have about 600 products in our store so you can get an idea of search speed on a moderate speed server.

The Power Search function can also be used for pre-defined form pulldowns in your store. As an example, the genre and decade searches on the left side of this screen search a specific field, with store owner pre-defined selections. This same technique can be used for things like manufacturer searches if you have a manufacturer field in your products.dbf.

4 Search Engine Tracker Copernicus / Miva Central

The Search Engine Tracker is a logging module that helps the storeowner understand and quantify a Search Engine marketing campaign or the current status of search engine positioning. Graphs and “sortable” reports make it easy for you to analyze the data being collected about your search engine campaigns. This module separately tracks click-throughs and buy-throughs so you can determine which search engines and paid listing sources are worth the investment.

Key Benefits

  • Tracks “click-throughs” from all search engines you specify so that you can evaluate which search engines send you the most “click-throughs”
    • Records search terms that were used to find the store
  • Tracks “buy-throughs” (also knows as click-through conversions) from all search engines you specify so that you can evaluate which search engines send you the most “buy-throughs”
  • Tracks keywords that generated the “click-through” and “buy-through” so that you can evaluate which keywords generate the most sales
  • Tracks Pay-Per-Click source referrals through direct store entries.
    • You determine which referrals that go into your Miva Merchant store that you want to track. You can track as many as you’d like. (Please see the usage documentation for an explanation of how to configure this option)
    • Please note: there is no pass-through API for pay-source tracking. Your URLs provided to the pay-source are required to go directly into your Miva Merchant store
  • Generate Reports for analysis:
    • Monthly click-through and buy-through graph! At a glance you can see the total number of click-throughs or buy-throughs of each day in the month.
    • Keyword Summary Report: this report lists the top keywords/phrases and tallies the number of click-throughs and buy-throughs associated with each keyword/phrase. You can sort this data by keyword/phrase.
    • Engine/Referral Summary Report: this report lists the top referral search engines and tallies the number of click-throughs and buy-throughs coming from each of the top search engines.
    • Raw Log display: You can view all of the data collected over time and also view the most recent click-throughs and buy-throughs.
*Note: Search engine click-throughs that do not go directly into your Merchant store (i.e. they first go through a non-Merchant page such as index.html) will not be tracked in these statistics as a click-through from a specific search engine unless you use the Pass-Through API. You can set up the JavaScript Pass Through API in your static HTML pages so the Search Engine Tracker will recognize and track all click-throughs, even if the customer first lands on a static HTML page when entering your site.

Example Usage
A storefront that sells cakes and jelly beans online has come to the conclusion that investing in Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a wise investment of his marketing dollars. The storefront owner has decided to invest in increasing his rankings with the search engines by optimizing his site and has even decided he wants to pay for “paid source listings.” However, before he invests in SEO, he wants to make sure that he can track his investment. He wants to know how many Click-throughs and Buy-throughs he is getting from each search engine and he wants to know what key words are drawing in the highest amount of hits. And, since he’s decided to pay for clicks, he definitely wants to be able to track which of the sources are performing the best. Without this date, he’ll never know which of his SEO efforts are the most profitable for him and can’t analyze which ones to keep and which ones to drop.

The Solution: The storefront owner’s need for data to analyze his SEO investment is quickly solved with the Search Engine Tracker. This plug-in module to Miva Merchant allows the storefront owner to track Click-throughs and Buy-throughs in total, by search engine, by (storefront owner-defined) keyword and even allows him to track paid Click-throughs and Buy-throughs. The module graphs out total Click-throughs and Buy-throughs and gives the storefront owner the ability to sort through the data collected by search engine, keyword, and paid listings. And, just in case he wants to track a search engine that isn’t already included in the module, he can add all the search engines he wants to track! It’s a robust tool that gives the storefront owner all sorts of methods to slice and dice and view and analyze SEO data.

5 Search Manager Viking Coders / Miva Central

This module provides your store with a more configurable and robust search page. It permits you to offer your customer the option to search categories and attributes and to limit their search to particular fields in the Products database. Searches can be made case sensitive, restricted to searching only the entire phrase, and made to use either AND or OR. In addition, the module provides for the separate configuration of keywords for your products and those keywords can be included in the search. The module supports the Viking Coder's Additional Product Fields Manager module and you can provide your customers with the ability to search the fields that you have configured for your products. All of the configurable options, including the particular fields to search on, can selectively be made default options and hidden from your customers. In this way you can restrict the search to only those fields you want your customers to search in.

The module comes with two distinct admin interfaces. One provides for the simple configuration of a default layout for the search page and display of results. For those familiar with HTML and looking for a specific layout, there is a template based configuration option which provides for complete token and template based control over the layout of the search page and results listing. Support is also provided for Third Party modules in the same manner as my Category Page Templates and Product Page Templates modules.

A sampling of the module's features:

  • Can be configured to replace the standard Merchant Search link and will use the same search button. So you can have the standard search link instead point to the Search Manager search page
  • The search page can be linked to from a static link with a link of the form:
    áááhttp://yoursite.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=SRCHM&Store_Code=storecode
  • Customers can search the categories for their search terms and the results are displayed above the product results (in the standard display format; they can go anywhere you want with the template formatting).
  • Customers can restrict the search to find only the entire phrase they entered by surrounding the search terms in double quotes. Eg. "Clown nose" will find only those products which contain the exact phrase "Clown nose"
  • Keywords can be saved for each product and category and those can be used to search in. To search the keywords for the products is an option for the products. The keywords are searched automatically for the categories. In both cases a tab is added to the individual category and product screens so that the keywords can be added.
  • You can redirect customers who add products from the results listing either back to the search page or to the basket.
  • All of the buttons (eg. "search", "add to basket", "previous", etc.) are configurable w/ images and alternate text.
  • When using the Template formatting option, you can use tokens to add drop down select lists with terms your customers might want to search for. They can then search for those with a simple selection from the list.
  • When using the Template formatting option, you can provide the customer with the option to sort the displayed results ascending or descending by product name, product code, or product id.
  • When using the Template formatting option, you can use multiple search fields to prompt your customer to search for multiple terms. For example, you could provide a field for "title" and a field for "author" to prompt our customer to narrow their search
  • Ability to search category headers and footers.

6 Search Friendly Links Copernicus / Miva Central

The Search Friendly Links module replaces the links in the category tree and category pages of Miva Merchant with “short links” that are more search engine friendly. Miva Merchant uses long links with 4 variables. Some search engines will not follow these links while they will follow shorter links with fewer variables.

Key Benefits

  • Generates short-links in the category tree and category pages in Miva Merchant
  • Interprets short-links from any web page or email
  • Benefits of shorter links
    • Short links are generally more likely to be followed by Search Engine spiders
    • Easy to write (and remember) direct links to products and categories in your store
    • Long links may word-wrap in some email systems, causing them not to link properly
    • Shorter links are less likely to word wrap
    • Search engines frequently will not read links with multiple variables (a.k.a. “long links”) such as those produced by Miva Merchant
    • A typical Miva Merchant link such as:
      http://www.yourstore.com/pathto/merchant.mv? Store_Code=ST&Screen=SFNT&Category_Code=CTGY1&Product_Code=PRD1

      is shortened to:

      http://www.yourstour.com/pathto/merchant.mv?page=ST/SFNT/CTGY1/PRD1
      or: http://www.yourstore.com/page/ST/SFNT/CTGY1/PRD1

The reduction in the number of variables helps with search engine spiders

  • Short links are always interpreted and understood by your store when the module is installed and turned on. Therefore, any “short” external link can be used even if you have turned off the display of the short links.
  • Long links are always interpreted and understood by your store; so previous search engine listings and external links continue to work normally.
  • The “display” of the short links in your store can be disabled, though the store will continue to interpret the short links from external sources (ie: the companion product Search Friendly Store Map, emails and mailing list, etc)
The Search Friendly Links module can produce best results when used in conjunction with the companion product Search Friendly Store Map. The store map product will generate a static HTML page containing Search Friendly Links to every product and category in your store! Search engines tend to give static HTML pages (and the links on these pages) higher precedence and ranks. When used together, these two products generally enhance search engine positioning.

New In v4.02/v4.52:
  • Directory Style Short Links: http://www.yourstore.com/page/SC/PROD/CAT1/PROD1
  • OpenUI Token and Copernicus OpenUI SuperMod Template Compatible

***NOTE: In order to generate the short links with only one variable, each of the included variables are separated with a forward-slash ("/") character. Thus, no category or product should have this character in the category or product code.

Example Usage A storefront owner that sells cakes and jelly beans online wants to improve the search engine positioning of the store. He has an attractive storefront and has made it very customer friendly (yep, you guessed it – he’s using the Copernicus Customer Service Suite) but the only shoppers who come to his site are repeat customers who originally heard about his site through “word of mouth.” He knows that if he could just get listed in the major search engines he could increase his sales, but he can’t understand why his site has not been “spidered” by the search engines. He’s not ready to “pay per click” with search engines like Overture, he just wants to get listed.

As a result of his frustration about his search engine placement (or actually, lack thereof), the storefront owner has been learning a lot about search engine optimization (SEO). He has learned that the reason his website has no placement on the search engines is because Miva Merchant produces dynamic pages with links that are not read by the spiders and robots sent out by search engines to find websites. The links are too long (those spiders are so impatient!) and spiders disqualify them due to having too many variables. Of course, he knows that it’s also very important that his pages are full of good content that can be easily logged by the search engines.

The Solution: The Search Friendly Links module will quickly solve the long links problem that this storefront is having. The Search Friendly Links module turns the long links for each category and product page into “short links” that are easily read by those spiders and robots. Further, he likes to make posts to the “Dessert-lovers” email forum; but every time he posts a link to one of his products, the links are so long they “word-wrap” and become un-clickable! So he installs the Search Friendly Links module, and starts posting short links to his products. Now his links look better in his store and his email, and the spiders are happier too!

8 Search Engine Tweak Pro Pixel Composer / Miva Central

You've got your store spidered by the search engines, you're showing up in the search engine results, but you just can't seem to improve your rankings...Search Engine Tweak Pro (SETPro) is here to help!

Search engines take into account many factors when ranking web results, and one of the most important is proper page content optimization. Miva Merchant's dynamic page creation is not designed to be search engine friendly with how it creates and displays the page content. This is where SETPro comes in to play with a number of optimizations and enhancements for product and category screens. These optimizations are primarily done with the Google search engine in mind, but are also relevant to most other popular search engines.

    PRODUCT SCREENS:

    • Product Name Tags:

Allows you to set the product names on the product screens to a preferred heading tag, bold, or none (

      ,

      ,

      ,

      , ).

The keywords to focus on for an individual product page are typically contained within the product name. Making the product name a larger font size using the heading tags, compared to most of the other page content, adds extra weight to those keywords when rankings are determined.

    • Remove Store Name In Product Title Bar:

Optionally strips out the store name in the product screen title bars.

Page titles are extremely important to search engines. Miva Merchant adds the store name in the browser window's title bar along with the product name. This is a good thing, but it may also make it undesireable by diluting the product name keywords with an unnecessary store name, thus giving less weight to your keyword focus.

    • Product Description at Top of HTML Body:

Optionally placed at the very top of the page, just after the tag in the page code, this displays the product name followed by the first 200 characters of the product description. Any HTML used in the description is stripped out before being displayed at the page top.

Stock Miva Merchant nests a considerable amount of hidden tables within one another. It makes for an adequate display but search engines don't see page content as the viewer does. That creates a large amount of page code that pushes the product descriptions far down the page, even possibly tripping up some older search engines. It's best to have your real keyword content as far up the page code as possible, creating more keyword weight and improving relevancy for the product pages. It's recommended to use either this option or the commented out feature described below, but not both.

    • Commented Out Product Description at Top of HTML Body:

Optionally placed at the very top of the page, just after the tag in the page code. This option adds the product name followed by the first 200 characters of the product description text, commented out (hidden from view). Any HTML used in the description is stripped out before it's added to the top of the page code.

This is the same as the product description display above, except that the description and title are commented out, essentially invisible, at the top of the page. Most search engines will ignore comment tags but some may take them into account. This is an elegant alternative to actually displaying the product name with description at the top of the page, leaving the page as it's meant to be displayed. It's recommended to use either this option or the displayed product description feature described above, but not both.

    CATEGORY SCREENS:

    • Category Name Tags:

Allows you to set the category names on the category screen, to a preferred heading tag, bold, or none (

      ,

      ,

      ,

      , ).

The keywords to focus on for an individual category page are typically contained within the category name. Making the category name a larger font size using the heading tags, compared to most of the other page content, adds extra weight to those keywords when rankings are determined.

    • Remove Store Name In Category Title Bar:

Optionally strips out the store name in the category screen title bars.

Page titles are extremely important to search engines. Miva Merchant adds the store name in the browser window's title bar along with the category name. This is a good thing, but it may also make it undesireable by diluting the category name keywords with an unnecessary store name, thus giving less weight to your keyword focus.

    • Product Links in Line-Item Listings:

Optionally replaces the product name with a linked product name, when a line-tem listing is used. This is mainly for category screens, but also applies to related products, search results, and product list screens.

Search Engines add additional keyword weight to pages using those keywords contained in incoming anchor text (links) from other pages.

    • Product Short Description in Line-Item Listings:

Optionally adds a short product description under the product name when a line-item listing is used. Mostly used for category screens, but also applies to related products, search results, and product list screens when line-item formatting is used. Choices are:

      1. None
      2. Product Description (First 200 characters with stripped out HTML code)
      3. Product Short Description (Displays from the OpenUI Short Description Field)
Particularly helpful with non-descriptive category screens or related product areas, by adding more useful content for search engines to index. Also useful for adding varied keyphrases by use of the product's Short Description field.

10 Search Friendly Store Map Copernicus / Miva Central

The Search Friendly Store Map module creates a static HTML page containing Search Friendly Links to all of the categories and products in your Miva Merchant store. When you provide an HTML link to the Store Map from your home page, search engines will read the map and will then be directed to catalog every category and product in your store.

The Search Friendly Store Map optionally uses short-style links in order to provide search engines with links that are more likely to be followed. When using a short-link style, this module should only be used with its sister-module, Search Friendly Links. The Search Friendly Links module understands the short links in the Store Map and interprets the short links so that your store links function properly. When used together, these two products greatly improve the possibility of having your storefront “spidered” by the search engines.

The Search Friendly Store Map optionally uses “directory style” short links which are then rewritten into Search Friendly Links using the Apache mod_rewrite commands described in the manual. This third (optional) style of link should only be used when Apache-style URL rewriting is available and the Search Friendly Links module is also installed. This format should provide optimal spidering, as all products and categories are seen as “static html” pages via the Store Map.

    Key Benefits:

    • Generates a static HTML Store Map page from your Miva Merchant site
    • Static HTML page contains links to all category and product pages in your Miva Merchant site
    • All links in the Store Map are optionally “Search Friendly”
    • The Store Map page can be provided to search engines for “spidering”
    • The Store Map page can be made available on your website to give customers a quick way to navigate through your site
    • Map Headers and Footers are configurable so map can serve as a “splash page’
    • Choice of three link styles:
      1. Standard Miva Merchant links
      2. Short-style “merchant.mv?page=” (Search Friendly) Links:
        ie: http://www.store.com/path/merchant.mv?page=Store/Screen/Cat/Prod
      3. Static HTML “directory” style links using .htaccess rewriting:
        ie: http://www.store.com/page/Store/Screen/Cat/Prod
    • Inserts a LINK tag in the HTML HEAD section of your Miva Merchant storefront
    • LINK tags tell a search engine to read the static HTML page and catalog all the category and product pages in the store map
    • Allows you to re-generate the static HTML page with the click of a button when you add more products or categories to your Miva Merchant storefront
    • Create an updated list of your category and product pages on the HTML page

When search engines “spider” the static HTML Store Map page created by the Search Friendly Store Map module, they will see every product and category in your store. The short links lead the spiders down to the actual, dynamic pages in your Miva Merchant site and the search engines can then catalog the dynamic pages. In essence, you are using a static HTML page that is easy to update and automatically uses short links to lure the spiders deep into the dynamic pages of Miva Merchant.

***NOTE: When using either of the optional links (Short-style links or Directory-style links) this module must be used in conjunction with its sister-module, Search Friendly Links. A mod_rewrite rule is required when using directory style links. Please consult your hosting provider to see if mod_rewrite is supported to determin if this link style will be available to you.

13 Meta Tag Generator Copernicus / Miva Central

Search Engine Optimization for Miva Merchant
Miva Merchant does not inherently provide the Meta Tags that are used by search engines to catalog websites. The MetaTag Generator automatically provides the Meta Tags required by search engines for proper search engine recognition and positioning. This module creates those tags for you and allows your storefront to be recognized and cataloged by the search engines.

    Key Benefits Include:

    • Automatically generates category- and product-specific keywords based on existing category and product names in Miva Merchant
    • Automatically generates a page description based on the existing site introduction page, category and product headers in Miva Merchant
    • Places these keywords in the HTML HEAD section of your Miva Merchant store – exactly where the search engines go to look for Meta Tags!
    • Allows you to specify site-wide keywords that are added to all pages
    • Automatically creates META ROBOT tags to indicate which pages should be followed and indexed (ie: Store Front, Category and Product pages), and "noindex" for pages such as the Login & Checkout
    • Allows you to tell the search engines how often to come back and spider your site through the “Meta Revisit-After” functionality
    • Gives you FULL CONTROL of your product and category Meta Tag descriptions and keywords
    • Specify Site-Wide Keywords that are added to all pages
    • All descriptions and keywords can be customized individually for the store front, category and product pages

It's a common misconception that search engines don't properly catalog Miva Merchant sites; the truth is that Merchant does not provide the proper search engine Meta Tags, causing poor search engine placement. Adding this module to your store will provide search engine compliant Meta Tags, improving how some search engines will catalog your site!

14 HitsLink NetPush / Miva Central

The NetPush HitsLink module will dynamically record page hits in your stats account at HitsLink. This module will simulate the page in Miva that your customer is on. For example, in your HitsLink stats, you would see Miva_srch or Miva_ctgy_Flowers instead of merchant.mvc or a long query string. This makes your statistics easier to read. Invoices are also recorded at checkout and can help you track the success of advertising campaigns like Pay Per Click.

    15 Y Feed Weiland / Miva Central

Export your Miva Merchant product data in the basic file format required for Yahoo Product Search (© 2003 Yahoo! Inc.). The data feed submissions automate inclusion in their beta ecommerce search directory. Fields included: code, product-url, name, description (html removed), price, image-url, merchant-category, shopping-category . See "Limitations" below for products not included in this initial module release. This Miva Merchant plugin module works with both MMUI and OpenUI. No mmui.mv edits required.

Most agree, Yahoo! is the king of commercial and non-commercial directories on the Internet. Their new venture to create a listing of actual items for sale across the Internet, rather than pages with hits on keywords, is a bold attempt to better target customers and buyers in a symbiotic relationship. This is a giant leap in eCommerce, providing comparison shopping using the Yahoo! Product Search index. If you are a Miva Merchant store owner you CANNOT afford to miss this opportunity, especially since inclusion in the beta test index is currently free. How much have you invested in getting your store's search engine rankings? If you find you are getting traffic and earning revenue from this venture, you may find it beneficial to stay on after the beta period has ended. This gives you an opportunity to "test the waters".

A module designed for the specific purpose of creating a data feed for Yahoo! Product Search (© 2003 Yahoo! Inc.), rather than a generic data export can include features which make it the best solution for the task:

    • Include an affiliate code in the URLs so that you can better track where actual sales are coming from
    • If your store is a single store in the domain, you can remove the Store_Code from the URL to aid in search engine spidering
    • If you are using our Flexible Product Description (recommended) or our Edit More (only for the very experienced) modules, the additional field data can be added to the description for the general products data feed.
    • Y Feed plugin module creates the datafeed flat file directly from your admin
      • Frequent, no hassle submissions keep your data current in Yahoo Product Search (© 2003 Yahoo! Inc.).
      • Eliminates the need to copy product and category databases from the server to your PC to produce a flat file export with software such as MS Excel
      • Uses your data as it exists within admin at the moment it is run
    • Control over category insertion
      • Limit export to specific categories
      • Automatically builds the category hierarchy from each product's category up to top level category
      • Add Yahoo! category names, in addition to the actual category hierarchy
    • Removes html from your product descriptions
    • Included in the module are features to eliminate timeouts when generating the data feed export of large numbers of products
    • Exports to your documents directory rather than your data directory for ease of capture and transmittal

Don't delay. The Yahoo! Product Search (© 2003 Yahoo! Inc.) index is still in beta. As such, knowledge about it is not yet widespread due to limited promotion. The The Yahoo! Product Search Team has been reviewing requests for inclusion and currently have a very fast turn around time. Your store may or may not be accepted and I would expect it to take longer and have more stipulations for acceptance and continued inclusion as this service becomes more popular. You should request acceptance into The Yahoo! Product Search Team as soon as possible. Once accepted, whether you use our module for building the datafeed or some other software, you should do it now while time is on your side. Our Y Feed module produced the file that was used to get 500+ of our pages listed.

As this is a new endeavor for Yahoo! Inc., I expect them to change their format and add new capabilities over time. Licensees of the 4.x version of this module will have free upgrades of the module through the 4.x version.

Miva Merchant (© 2002 Miva Corp.), Yahoo! Product Search (© 2003 Yahoo! Inc.), and MS Excel (© 2003 Microsoft Corporation) are copyright by their respective owners.

    Steps

  • Submit request to Yahoo! Inc. for acceptance into the program INFO
  • Install this module and run it
  • Once accepted, FTP resulting datafeed flat file to Yahoo!
  • Check your pages in Yahoo! Product Search (© 2003 Yahoo! Inc.) when they show up

    Limitations:
    1) Currently the module can only be used for the general products export for Merchant 4.x uncompiled. With the compiled version (Merchant 4.14 and newer) of the module, you can export book, music, and video type products if you are using one of the additional field methods above.
    2) We will be upgrading the Y Feed module for compiled Merchant (4.14 and newer) to include the following product categories in the future: video games, computers, and electronics.

17 Froogle Data Feed Product Export Weiland / Miva Central

Export your Miva Merchant product data in the basic file format required for FroogleTM (© 2002 Google) data feed submissions for inclusion in their ecommerce search engine. Fields included: product_url, name, description (html removed), price, image_url, category, offer_id (code). This Miva Merchant plugin module works with both MMUI and OpenUI. No mmui.mv edits required.

Most agree, Google is the mother of all search engines on the Internet. Their new venture to create a listing of actual items for sale across the Internet, rather than pages with hits on keywords, is a bold attempt to better target customers and buyers in a symbiotic relationship. This is a giant leap in eCommerce, providing comparison shopping using the Google search engine. If you are a Miva Merchant store owner you CANNOT afford to miss this opportunity, especially since inclusion in the FroogleTM index is free. How much have you invested in getting your store's search engine rankings?

A big side benefit to getting listed in FroogleTM is that the Google company is spidering your site, thus it may increase the number of your pages listed in Google. Coincidentally, my site went from 1220 to 1350 pages in Google within a week after submitting the first data feed to FroogleTM. Granted, I use Static Catalog Generator to create static html pages of all of my products so there were already a lot of pages in Google. Now I have an additional 130 which had been overlooked. If you don't have a good representation of your product catalog already in Google or other search indexes, you may want to use the Static Catalog Generator to optimize site visibility. Search engine optimization requires a multi-pronged approach (static html pages, shorter links, specific paid or unpaid submissions to directories). I have found that use of static html pages consistently gets my site into search indexes better than the dynamically produced Miva Merchant pages. There is no direct indication that listing in Froogle will effect your listing in Google, only time will tell.

A module designed for the specific purpose of creating a data feed for FroogleTM (rather than a generic data export) can include features which make it the best solution for the task:

    • Include an affiliate code in the URLs so that you can better track where actual sales are coming from
    • If your store is a single store in the domain, you can remove the Store_Code from the URL to aid in search engine spidering
    • If you are using our Volume Pricing module (version 4.53 or newer), you have the option to submit the lowest (bulk) prices as your product prices, thus making your listings more attractive when compared with competitors in the FroogleTM listing. However, the Google Feeds Support said the quantity option is not yet supported so it would be "best if you just give the price for ordering a single item". Eventually they plan to list the minimum break points to obtain the volume prices.
    • Fast Data Feed plugin module creates the datafeed flat file directly from your admin
      • Frequent, no hassle submissions keep your data current in FroogleTM
      • Eliminates the need to copy product and category databases from the server to your PC to produce a flat file export with software such as MS Excel
      • Uses your data as it exists within admin at the moment it is run
    • Control over category insertion
      • Limit export to specific categories
      • Automatically builds the category hierarchy from each product's category up to top level category
      • Optionally modify category placement, overriding actual category hierarchy
    • Removes html from your product descriptions; converting the brackets to escaped characters or even hiding html using the !-- technique did not satisfy FroogleTM support staff - it must be completely removed
    • Included in the module are features to eliminate timeouts when generating the data feed export of large numbers of products
    • Exports to your documents directory rather than your data directory for ease of capture and transmittal

Don't delay. The FroogleTM index is still in beta. As such, knowledge about it is not yet widespread due to limited promotion. The FroogleTM support team has been reviewing requests for inclusion and currently have reasonable turn around time. Your store may or may not be accepted and I would expect it to take longer and have more stipulations for acceptance and continued inclusion as this service becomes more popular. You should request acceptance into FroogleTM as soon as possible. Once accepted, whether you use our module for building the datafeed or some other software, you should do it now while time is on your side.

As this is a new endeavor for FroogleTM, I expect them to change their format and add new capabilities over time. Licensees of the 4.x version of this module will have free upgrades of the module through the 4.x version. We do not yet have a 2.x version available but will be exploring that option next week. Please ensure you select the correct module version for the version of Merchant you have.

18 Celestia Content Management Copernicus / Miva Central

With an Introductory Price of less than $300, it's time to buy Celestia Content Management!

The Celestia Content Management System by Copernicus provides the small business owner with website development and maintenance capabilities previously only accessible to large corporations with IT staff or significant budgets. Celestia Content Management provides dynamic database driven content, customizable forms, search engine optimization and many additional major features only found in expensive content management systems.

The Celestia™ Content Management System is a robust PHP & MySQL server-based application that provides a point-and-click web-based interface for creating, updating and modifying your website. Celestia, formerly known as the Copernicus WebSite Builder, has been actively developed and deployed for over 3 years and represents the best-practices for content management systems.

    • Celestia is a web-based software package. This software gives a non-technical user the capability to build and maintain a robust, feature-rich website without the assistance of a programmer. Celestia provides the core technology necessary to build a user and search engine friendly site.
    • Celestia is your website. The core content management system is used to build and display your site. When viewing the Copernicus site, you're using the Celestia system that we have deployed for the Copernicus website!
    • Celestia is comprehensive. With a full suite of modules provided in the core system, Celestia contains all of the necessary technologies for an outstanding web presence. From browser-side HTTP/1.1 compliant page caching to short search-engine friendly URLs and robust page layout modules, Celestia provides the capabilities to build almost any SMB site.
    • Celestia is extensible. With an object-oriented PHP API, adding new features via modules to Celestia can be accomplished by novice and advanced PHP programmers alike. The core module API handles database creation and abstraction, configuration and standard layouts. As a developer, you can focus on the portions of your module that are most important- the core features you wish to provide- rather than spending countless hours creating database and configuration systems.

19 Fast Data Feed for Froogle TM v5 Emporium Plus / Miva Central

Export your Miva Merchant product data in the basic file format required for FroogleTM ( 2002 Google) data feed submissions for inclusion in their ecommerce search engine. Fields included: product_url, name, description (html removed), price, image_url, category, offer_id (code). This module is for MIVA Merchant 5.x. We also have the corresponding module for an older version of Merchant.

Most agree, Google is the mother of all search engines onthe Internet. Their feature to create a listing of actual items for sale across the Internet, rather thanpages with hits on keywords, is a bold attempt to better target customers and buyers in a symbiotic relationship. This is a giant leap in eCommerce, providing comparison shopping using the Google search engine. If you are a MivaMerchant store owner you CANNOT afford to miss this opportunity, especially since inclusion in the FroogleTMindex is free. How much have youinvested in getting your store's search engine rankings?

A big side benefit to getting listed in FroogleTM is that the Google company is spidering your site, thus it may increase the number of your pages listed in Google. Coincidentally, my site went from 1220 to 1350 pages in Google within a week after submitting the first data feed to FroogleTM. I had an additional 130 which had been previously overlooked. There is no direct indication that listing in Froogle will effect your listing in Google, only time will tell.

A module designed for the specific purpose of creatinga data feed for FroogleTM (rather than a generic data export)can include features which make it the best solution for the task:
    • Include an affiliate code in the URLs so that youcan better track where actual sales are coming from
    • If your store is a single store in the domain, you can remove the Store_Code from the URL to aid in search engine spidering
    • Fast Data Feed plugin module creates the datafeed flat file directly from your admin
      • Frequent, no hassle submissions keep your data currentin FroogleTM
      • Eliminates the need to copy product and category databases from the server to your PC to produce a flat file export with software such as MS Excel
      • Uses your data as it exists within admin at the moment it is run
    • Control over category insertion
      • Limit export to specific categories
      • Automatically builds the category hierarchy from each product's category up to top level category
      • Optionally modify category placement, overriding actual category hierarchy
    • Removes html from your product descriptions; convertingthe brackets to escaped characters or even hiding html using the !-- technique did not satisfy FroogleTM support staff - it must be completely removed
    • Included in the module are features to eliminate timeouts when generating the data feed export of large numbers of products
    • Exports to your documents directory rather than yourdata directory for ease of capture and transmittal
Don't delay. The FroogleTM index is a great way to list your products in a major search engine.

    Steps
  • Submit request to FroogleTM for acceptance into the program
  • Install this module and run it
  • Once accepted, FTP resulting (username).txt flat file to FroogleTM
  • Check your pages in FroogleTM when they show up

If you are going to submit to indexes in addition to Froogle, you might want to take a look at our Template Data Feed. It can create data feeds in just about any order the specification requires.
